U.S.-Canada Border Closing for a Minimum of 30 Days

On Monday, March 16, 2020 Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Canadian border would be closed to non-residents of Canada, with several exceptions including U.S. nationals. With the ever-changing news on the COVID-19 pandemic, on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, PM Trudeau announced that the U.S.- Canada border will be closing, in the interest of Canadians, to non-essential traffic. This new announcement also came with multiple exemptions, including seasonal workers, trucking and workers who cross the border on a daily basis to complete essential work. Trade nor the supply chain will be affected by this ban.

Today, the Prime Minister’s Office has released further details regarding the closure of the U.S.-Canada land border. The closure will be implemented on March 21, 2020 and will last for a minimum of 30-days, at which point the decision to stop or extend the ban will be reviewed. The ban is specifically for non-essential travel, which includes tourism or recreational in nature.
